Signs of Autism in Children Ages 6 – 9 Months
Between the ages of 6 – 9 months, babies are still meeting developmental milestones at different times regardless of a diagnosis of autism or a related disorder. However, by 6 – 9 months, you might start to notice some differences in your child’s development that could indicate a need for Early Intervention Services or more close monitoring for autism signs as your baby gets older. Some of these indicators may include:
- Disinterest in certain sounds (e.g., not turning to locate where sounds are coming from)
Perceived lack of affection - Lack of eye contact
- May demonstrate limited verbal expression (e.g., not laughing or making squealing sounds)
- May not reach for objects.
- May demonstrate limited facial expressions and/or emotional reactivity (e.g., not smiling on their own)
- Does not reach up toward you when you reach to pick him or her up
- May not use many gestures
If you notice any of these signs, it doesn’t necessarily mean your child has ASD. To find out for sure, discuss your concerns with your child’s health care professional.
